It can make someone smile, and there is nothing wrong with saying it. But if the goal is to help a person grow\u2014and to make a strong behavior easier to repeat\u2014it leaves out the most useful part of the feedback.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Recognition should be specific enough to repeat.<\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When leaders name what actually worked, recognition becomes more than praise. It becomes operational feedback. The employee understands the behavior that mattered, the team gets a clearer picture of the standard, and the organization has a better chance of seeing that behavior again.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Praise feels good. Specific recognition teaches.<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine an employee just handled a frustrated guest well. A quick \u201cgreat job with that guest\u201d communicates approval, but it does not explain why the interaction worked.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now make the recognition specific: \u201cYou stayed calm, clarified what they actually needed, and gave them a clear next step. That kept the situation from becoming bigger than it needed to be.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That version gives the employee something usable. Stay calm. Listen for the real need. Make the next step clear. The standard becomes visible through real behavior instead of living only in a handbook, training deck, or poster on a breakroom wall.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recognition is part of operations<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognition sometimes gets treated as a culture extra\u2014something nice leaders do after the \u201creal work\u201d is finished. I see it differently. Recognition is one of the simplest ways leaders reinforce the operation they are trying to build.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If recovery matters, recognize a strong recovery and name the choices that made it work. If clean handoffs matter, call out the teammate who passed along the right information before a problem developed. If ownership matters, recognize the person who noticed something outside their immediate task and took responsible action.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those moments teach far more than generic applause because they connect culture to the work itself.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specificity also helps people feel seen<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a human side to this too. Specific recognition tells someone you were paying attention. You did not just notice the outcome. You noticed how they got there.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction matters. Teams are more likely to trust recognition when it feels earned and grounded in something real. It moves the conversation away from empty praise and toward clarity, appreciation, and growth.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A small leadership habit<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next time you are about to say \u201cgreat job,\u201d add one more sentence. Tell the person what you saw and why it mattered.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catch it. Name it. Connect it to the impact.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognition is not fluff.
