Read it problem by problem, and a pattern usually starts to appear. Titles are useful shorthand. They tell people where you sat in one organization at one point in time. But they are not always the best explanation of what you actually know how to do.

That matters more as careers become less linear. People move between industries, functions, team structures, and levels of responsibility. The title changes, the vocabulary changes, and suddenly capable people find themselves spending half an interview explaining why one chapter belongs next to another.

There is a better way to tell the story: name the recurring problems people trust you to solve.

Titles describe a chapter. Patterns describe your value.

Stop defending every title

When a career crosses marketing, communications, operations, hospitality, guest experience, or leadership, it is tempting to make every role sound identical. That usually creates a weaker story, not a stronger one.

The roles were different. They should sound different. What matters is the connective tissue underneath them.

Maybe you repeatedly create clarity when information is messy. Maybe you make handoffs easier between teams. Maybe you translate a strategy into something frontline employees can actually use. Maybe you improve an experience by noticing where the process creates unnecessary friction. Maybe people trust you to take a complicated idea and carry it all the way into execution.

Those are not job titles. They are transferable patterns.

Look for the problem beneath the responsibility

A résumé naturally lists responsibilities: managed campaigns, led teams, built processes, handled guest issues, launched programs, supported operations. The more useful career question is what problem each responsibility was solving.

What did you make clearer? Communication, expectations, ownership, priorities, or the next step?

What did you make easier? A guest journey, an employee handoff, a workflow, a launch, or a decision?

Who did you help succeed? Guests, frontline teams, leaders, partners, clients, or another department?

What did people trust you to own? A relationship, a project, a message, an operation, or the space between several of them?

When the same answers keep appearing across different roles, you have found part of your career pattern.

Experience → Pattern → Next Role

Your experience gives you evidence. The pattern explains what that evidence means. The next role becomes easier to evaluate when you know what value you want to keep using.

Patterns make transferable experience credible

“My skills are transferable” is true for many people, but it is still a claim. A pattern gives the claim evidence.

If you can show that you have repeatedly brought order to ambiguity, improved a guest or employee experience, connected departments, built confidence in teams, or moved work from concept to execution, the industry label becomes less important. You are not asking someone to imagine that you could add value in a new environment. You are showing the kind of value you have already created in several environments.

This does not mean every skill transfers perfectly. New industries have their own systems, language, regulations, and technical knowledge. Humility matters. Learning matters. But a new context does not erase the underlying capabilities that helped you succeed before.

Your pattern should be specific enough to be useful

“I am a people person” is not a pattern. Neither is “I am a strategic leader.” Those descriptions are broad enough to fit almost anyone.

A useful pattern has a little friction in it. It describes the situation you are good at improving.

For example: “I help teams turn complicated strategy into clear experiences employees can actually deliver.” Or: “I am strongest where guest experience, communication, and operations meet, especially when several teams need to move together.”

Notice what those statements do. They do not depend on a specific title. They explain the kind of problem, the way you contribute, and the outcome you care about.

Use the pattern to evaluate opportunities, too

This is not only an interview exercise. It is a filter.

A job can sound impressive and still be a poor fit if the work rarely uses the problems you are best at solving. Another role may have an unfamiliar title but place you directly in the kind of environment where your strongest pattern shows up every day.

That is one reason career growth cannot be reduced to climbing a title ladder. Growth can also mean increasing the scale, complexity, or consequence of the problems you are trusted to own.

The question becomes less “Is this title the obvious next step?” and more “Does this role let me use my strongest pattern at a meaningful level?”

Build a one-sentence career through-line

Try this exercise with your last three or four meaningful roles. Ignore the titles for a moment. For each one, write down:

the recurring problem you were asked to improve,

the people who depended on your work,

the kind of ownership you were trusted with, and

what became clearer, stronger, easier, or more effective because you were involved.

Then circle the words that repeat.

Your career story probably lives there.

The next chapter does not have to look like the last one

Careers are allowed to evolve. A move between industries or functions does not automatically mean you are starting over. Sometimes it means you are bringing a useful pattern into a different room.

That is also one of the ideas behind Chasing Magic: experience shapes how we lead. The value of an experience is not limited to the place where it happened. We carry lessons, instincts, standards, and ways of seeing into whatever comes next.

So if your career feels difficult to explain, stop trying to make every title line up perfectly.

Ask a better question: What problem do people consistently trust me to own?

The answer may tell a much clearer story than the titles ever could.

Explore more about Ryan’s experience, portfolio, and Chasing Magic.

A career makes more sense when you stop reading it title by title.
